Enhancing Equity in Agriculture and Conservation

As a Durham native and Co-Founder of the Black Farmers' Market, I have firsthand experience in addressing the unique challenges our local farmers face in an effort to grow their businesses and connect with the community to provide fresh produce and meats directly to the community. Through the Black Farmers' Market, we have created a supportive network of farmers, community based organizations, and food systems that provide resources, visibility, and economic opportunities for people of the African diaspora, women, first-generation entrepreneurs, people living with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. This work has given me a deep understanding of the needs and potential of our local agricultural community.

My commitment to expanding access to soil and water conservation programs stems from the lessons learned and successes achieved with the Black Farmers' Market. By ensuring that all farmers, especially small and historically underserved ones, have the resources they need to thrive, we can promote sustainable farming practices and enhance the overall well-being of our community.

In my role as Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor, I will leverage the connections and insights gained from the Black Farmers' Market to scale economic and educational efforts county-wide and state-wide. My goal is to continue the work of Anjali to create equitable opportunities for sustainable farming practices that benefit all communities in Durham. By working closely with local agricultural groups, schools, and continuing to advocate for historically underserved farmers, I will ensure that we build a more inclusive and resilient agricultural sector.

We all share a basic human need for food, and without the dedication and hard work of farmers, this need cannot be met; therefore, supporting our farmers is essential for sustaining our lives and our community.

Promoting Environmental Justice and Education

I recognize that clean air and healthy water are not luxuries—they are basic human rights. With the rapid growth and urbanization of our city, we face significant environmental challenges, including gentrification and the recent lead contamination in our parks, like Walltown. I will prioritize environmental justice initiatives to ensure that all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to clean, safe environments with the support from the hard working staff of the Soil and Water Department.

Drawing on my experience with the Black Farmers' Market, I will advocate for policies that reduce pollution, protect our natural resources, and promote green spaces. I aim to create educational programs to empower our community with the knowledge and tools needed to sustain and protect our environment. By addressing the environmental impacts of urbanization, we can make Durham a healthier place to live for everyone, from our youngest residents to our elders.

Increasing Economic Development and Expanding Green Jobs

Building on my work with the Black Farmers' Market, I will focus on driving economic development that supports local agriculture and the creation of green jobs. By promoting local produce and supporting farmers' markets, we can boost our local economy and ensure that fresh, healthy food is accessible to all Durham residents. This initiative not only supports our farmers but also fosters green job opportunities, ranging from sustainable farming practices to renewable energy projects, continuing a more resilient and self-sustaining community. By investing in both our agricultural sector and green industries, we can build a thriving, environmentally conscious Durham that benefits everyone.
